Michigan baby girl dies after cannon explodes

A 26-year-old man died Saturday from injuries sustained by a dysfunctional cannon in a baby shower in Michigan.

Evan Silva was hit by metal splinters when the cannon – to celebrate the occasion – exploded at around 7.30pm at the house in Gaines Township, MLive.com reports with reference to the state police.

Silva, who was standing about 10 feet from the device, was the only baby attendant hit by the shrapnel.

He was taken to a hospital in Flint but could not be rescued, the report said.

Investigators suspect gunpowder loaded into the cannon caused it to inflate.

The successful firing of the cannon, which was bought by the homeowner at auction, delivers a bright flash and a hard blow, the report said.

The homeowner fired it several times before Saturday.
