Michael’s Arts & Crafts closes its store at 808 Columbus Avenue at 99th Street, located in the Columbus Square shopping and apartment complex.
Along with Whole Foods, TJ Maxx and Home Goods, Michael’s has been one of Columbus Square’s anchor tenants since the beginning, securing the lease before construction of the complex was completed in 2010.
Michael’s renewed its lease for the 34,424-square-foot space in 2018, but the diamond signs indicate that the store is on track and offering some discounts.

According to its website, the company operates ‘more than 1,250 Michaels stores in 49 states and Canada’, making it the ‘largest art dealer in North America (based on the number of stores)’. The company reported $ 5.3 billion in sales during the 2018 financial year.
Michael’s has another location in Manhattan in Chelsea and several others in the districts.
More closes from Upper West Side
Recent announcements have been made that the chain store will close from its other locations – including one in North Babylon, Long Island, and in a mall in North Carolina.
More than 1,000 chain stores will close in NYC by 2020, which is nearly one in seven stores, according to the Center for an Urban Future report.
Some of the larger companies that closed UWS locations during 2020 include:
- Models: all stores, including the two UWS stores, closed.
- Century 21: All 13 stores, including a place on 66th and Broadway, closed.
- Flying Tiger Copenhagen: all US stores closed, including the location at 424 Columbus Avenue, between 80th and 81st streets.
- Jean Louis David: all four locations in Manhattan closed, including one at 2146 Broadway, between 75th and 76th streets.
- Unleashed by Petco: includes its location at 159 Columbus Avenue, between 67th and 68th streets.
- Papyrus: includes all locations, including three in the UWS: 209 Columbus Avenue (between 69th and 70th streets), 2157 Broadway (at 76th and Broadway), and their store at the Columbus Circle stores.
