Mets will not take the position for ousted GM Jared Porter

Sandy Alderson’s plan with his return to the Mets was to oversee the entire organization, with a president of baseball operations and general manager under him.

Then it became Alderson and just a GM.

On Tuesday, it completely became the Sandy Alderson show.

After the dismissal of GM Jared Porter – he was fired after ESPN reported that he sent ugly text messages to a female journalist in 2016 – Alderson indicated that he had no immediate plans to fill the position. That lets Alderson run the headquarters, with a kind of GM-by committee.

The key players are Assistant GM Zack Scott, Senior Strategy Officer John Ricco, Vice President of Amateur and International Exploration Tommy Tanous, Head of Pro Scouting Bryn Alderson and Senior Director of Baseball Operations Ian Levin. In addition, Ben Zauzmer was recently hired by the Dodgers to oversee research and development. Joe Lefkowitz, a research and development manager, also attends the daily Zoom meetings.

Scott, a former Red Sox CEO, was Porter for the GM post. His strength lies in analysis.

“One of the things we’ll be missing is similar contact staff and information we could get through Jared,” Alderson said. ‘Jared has a lot of contacts in the game – not just at the GM level, but at the GM level and below. It is a rich source of information and can lead to smaller transactions filling our roster. This is an area we will have to pick up. ”

Alderson’s involvement up to this point comes in the larger transactions, which are highlighted by the trade that Francisco Lindor and Carlos Carrasco of Cleveland achieved.

“My attention on the baseball side will increase somewhat and we will see how things develop,” Alderson said. ‘One of the things I was happy about was how the front office team developed as a group, led by Jared.

‘Jared was energetic, he was knowledgeable and I was very pleased with the direction it was heading. It’s a secondary consequence in this situation, but I’ll be a little more involved, but I have a lot of confidence in our group and I’m sure they will be able to act. ‘
