First lady Melania Trump found out she would not be attending the inauguration of President Joe Biden, just like the rest of us: via her husband’s Twitter account.
A senior White House staffer told CNN on Thursday that the first lady was unsure whether the president would break with tradition and refuse to attend the inauguration, symbolically undermining the peaceful transfer of power. She found out she and her husband would not be attending when he tweeted about it on January 8th.
“This is not the first time she’s heard what he’s doing, because he tweeted it before he told her,” the White House staff told CNN.
The president’s wife has largely remained silent about her husband’s months-long campaign to reverse the 2020 election result, although she appears to be supporting his efforts by calling for a ‘fair election’ after his loss.

“The American people deserve fair elections,” she said. tweeted the day after news agencies declared Biden the president-elect. “Every legitimate – not illegal – vote must be counted. We must protect our democracy with full transparency.”
But even as the president fights to stay in the White House, the president’s wife has been preparing for life in Washington, DC for the past two months. She’s packing up, storing things and sending the family’s belongings to the president’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida, and sending her son, Barron, to school in Florida.
After the president’s wife was silent for five days on January 6 after the uprising for the Trump action at the Capitol, the first lady on Monday issued a statement expressing sympathy with the rioters and police officers who died and accusing critics of spread ‘blissful gossip’ about her.
“I find it shameful that there have been screaming gossip stories, unfounded personal attacks and false misleading accusations about me – from people who are looking for relevance and have an agenda, around these tragic events.”
