Meghan Markle, Prince Harry show ‘Service Is Universal’ with storm relief in Texas

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry gave their support to a women’s shelter destroyed by storms in Texas over the weekend, after a week of big announcements from the royal couple.

Through their nonprofit Archewell Foundation, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex provided relief to Genesis Women’s Shelter & Support, an organization that helps families affected by domestic violence. The shelter in Dallas experienced major flooding amid the state’s ongoing power outages.

“The Duke and Duchess told the Genesis team today that their hearts remain with the community, with the families who serve Genesis, and with the volunteers and workers on the ground who selflessly provide care and support to those in need,” a A spokeswoman for the Sussexes shared with HuffPost, adding that the couple was ‘sad to see communities in Texas still struggling to access the basic resources we all need – water, heat, food, shelter’.

The donation from Meghan and Harry will help the organization with immediate needs, roof damage and additional repairs at a transitional housing facility called Annie’s House.

Jan Langbein, CEO of Genesis Women’s Shelter & Support, spoke in a statement on Sunday about the royals’ involvement. “Not only will this gift provide for our critical needs,” she said, “it shines an international spotlight on violence against women and children, letting survivors know they are not alone.”

A few days earlier, Buckingham Palace had confirmed that the Sussex would not return as working royals. In a seemingly pointed statement, the palace said that Queen Elizabeth ‘had written to confirm that it was not possible to continue with the responsibilities and duties associated with a life of public service.

Shortly afterwards, Meghan and Harry responded to the Queen’s statement with their own statement.

“As is evident from their work over the past year, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex remain committed to their duty and service to the United Kingdom and around the world and have offered their continued support to the organizations they have represented, regardless of their official role, “a spokesman for the couple shared with HuffPost. “We can all lead a service life. Service is universal. ”
