The next time you are pulled over, it could be put by an officer in a Ford pickup truck instead of a traditional ‘policeman’.

Ford Motor unveiled its new 2021 F-150 police response on Tuesday before the spring of state and local government. Commercial vehicles, such as police vehicles, are a focus of the company under Ford CEO Jim Farley, who took over the helm from Jim Hackett in October.

According to a Ford Motor spokesman, demand for a police version of Ford’s F-150 has been growing steadily since its launch in 2017. She declined to disclose specific sales of the chase pickup or Ford’s range of police vehicles.

The change from police cars to utility vehicles such as pickups and sport utility vehicles represents a greater trend by car manufacturers away from passenger vehicles. Ford stopped its last police car, a Ford Taurus, several years ago. According to the company, a police version of its Ford Explorer is now the best-selling model.

The police bakkie is based on the consumer version of the truck, but contains special options and setting to “meet strict use of law enforcement” at speeds of up to 120 km / h. The pickup also has a new ‘police car idle’, which allows officers to retrieve keys from the ignition and leave the truck safely with the engine running at the push of a button.

The new pickup of the police, like the consumer truck, has a remote connection or an air connection, as well as data and telematic analysis to help with vehicle time, operating costs and driving behavior. Customers can also choose to order a vehicle without the front console between the driver and the front passenger, which enables institutions to install their own department-specific consoles more easily.
