Desperate and impotent, the doctor Marcos Fonseca Barbosa opted to treat at home, his mother, coronavirus disease. The hope for hospitalization in Manaos, in the north of Brazil, was unattainable: “Tuve miedo de que muriera en mis brazos”, confiesa.
As a medical doctor for emergencies, Marcos, 36 years old, intends to admit in intensive care this past week, but the public hospital 28th of August is fully established by the constant internationalization of new patients, in a city where the number of contagious -19 exponentially subdivided into previous years.
His mother, Ruth, 56 years old, “had a fever, a bad patient. I was presented as a doctor, but we had four hopeful hours, sent in plastic bags”, related to AFP.
“I can not blame my colleagues, because it is a war zone”, acknowledges this medicine that works in various clinical clinics, also saturated by the pandemic.
With 2 million inhabitants, Manaos, the capital of the Brazilian Amazon, there are scenes of horror scenes in April and May, with common cavities in public cemeteries and refrigerated trucks installed in hospitals to preserve the corpses of the fallen.

“I never imagined a situation like this, nor in my pees’ peas,” Marcos relates.
