Caprara said his office is working with the Florida Department of Health and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to bring about the death of Dr. Gregory Michael to investigate. His death has not been definitively linked to the vaccine, but it is one of the possibilities being investigated, Caprara added.
According to Michael’s website, he was an obstetrician / gynecologist “for the past 15 years a private practice at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach.” According to public records, he was 56 years old.
Caprara said that Michael received a vaccine around December 19 and that he passed away ‘end of January 3 to 4’. Caprara conducted an autopsy on Tuesday, causing death pending the completion of studies by the medical examiner and partnerships.
He did not disclose which vaccine Michael had received; only Pfizer’s were offered outside of clinical trials the week Michael was vaccinated.
“Pfizer and BioNTech are aware of the death of a healthcare professional sixteen days after receiving a first dose of the vaccine, Pfizer said in a statement.” This is a very unusual clinical case of severe thrombocytopenia, condition that reduces the body’s ability to coagulate blood and stop the internal bleeding, “he said.
“We are actively investigating this matter, but at the moment we do not believe there is any direct connection with the vaccine,” the company said in the statement.
“No related safety signals have been identified in our clinical trials, the experience after marketing so far or with the mRNA vaccine platform. To date, millions of people have been vaccinated and we are monitoring all adverse events in individuals receiving our vaccine. It is important to note that serious adverse events, including non-vaccine-related deaths, will unfortunately occur at a similar rate as in the general population. “
“The known and potential benefits of current Covid-19 vaccines outweigh the known and potential risks that Covid-19 carries,” said Dr. Nancy Messonnier, director of the CDC’s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, said. “However, that does not mean we would not be able to see potentially serious health events in the future.”
According to the CDC, more than 5.3 million people received their first dose of Covid-19 vaccine in the US.
“Our immediate thoughts are with the grieving family,” Pfizer added.
CNN has asked the CDC and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for comment.
Mount Sinai Medical Center said in a statement that, due to medical privacy laws, it “cannot confirm or deny information about any patient. To the extent that we are aware of an incident involving any patient, the appropriate agencies will immediately contacted and our full cooperation. “
