If you ask the question, “Which carmaker makes the best cars?” you break open a big, messy can of worms. What defines the best? Is it speed? Build quality? Comfort? And who can decide which is best: car lovers, soccer moms or algorithms? Well, after a rigorous testing, Consumer Reports believe it has the answer: Mazda.

While not infallible, CR has a reasonable reputation for conducting unbiased and in-depth testing. It’s not just one reviewer who says the car is good. The score given to each brand reflects four different factors:

  • The CR test that analyzes more than 50 different performance areas.
  • Predict reliability based on problems identified in 17 different areas.
  • Owner satisfaction based on what CR members say.
  • Safety standards – you get more points if you have proven safety features everyone finishes, not just the higher-end.

For this analysis, CR also looked at how many green options the carmaker offers, which was a small bonus cost.

And after all that, Mazda ranked number one and took over the title of best carmaker Porsche. Here are the top five:

  1. Mazda
  2. BMW
  3. Subaru
  4. Porsche
  5. Honda

I do not know about you, but I was quite shocked when I saw that BMW stands so high – it jumps six places from 2020 to 2021 to achieve second place.

And yes, I can not let you go without the worst. In this list, number one is the worst car in the CR analysis:

  1. Alfa Romeo
  2. Land Rover
  3. Mitsubishi
  4. Jeep
  5. Lincoln

I was also very fascinated by the fact that Genesis was the biggest car in this whole debacle and lost 13 spaces between 2020 and 2021 to finish 15th. The test tests for Genesis machines were good, but this time it really suffered in the reliability department.
