Mayor Christian Estrosi asks tourists to stay away amid COVID-19 boom

The mayor of Nice in the south of France has asked tourists to stay away on Sunday as the holiday destination struggles with a sharp increase in COVID-19 cases.

“We are pleased to receive many tourists this summer as soon as we win this battle, but it is better to have a period while saying ‘do not come here, this is not the moment’,” said Mayor Christian Estrosi France Info radio.

He called on the government to impose stricter restrictions in the Mediterranean city, such as an exclusion from the weekend, in order to deter tourists.

‘We need strong measures that go beyond the nationwide evening clock at 18:00, or narrower evening clock or a partial and time-specific exclusion. A closing of the weekend would make sense, ‘Estrosi said.

Nice, according to local figures, fought the highest infection rate in the country, with 740 new cases per 100,000 inhabitants per week.

Estrosi said the influx of visitors who came during the holiday period contributed to the increasing cases.

“The weather is nice, everyone is rushing to get here. A closure of the weekend will stop it, without stopping economic activity in the city, ‘Estrosi said.
