Mavado’s son and co-accused sentenced to life in prison

Dante Brooks, a son of dancehall entertainer Mavado, was sentenced to life in prison in the circuit court on Friday for murder.

Brooks, 18, and his co-accused, Andre Hinds, were convicted in January this year of murder, unlawful possession of a firearm and arson in connection with the murder of Lorenzo Thomas in 2018.

Brooks must serve 22 years before he is eligible for parole consideration.

He was further sentenced to 15 years behind bars for each illegal possession of a firearm and arson. The three sentences must be executed simultaneously.

In connection with Hinds, he was sentenced to life in prison for murder, with the condition that he serve 17 years before being eligible for parole consideration.

He was also sentenced to 15 years each for illegal possession of a firearm and arson. His sentences must also run concurrently.

Brooks and Hinds have been charged in connection with the brutal murder of Lorenzo Thomas in the St Andrew community of Cassava Piece on 5 June 2018.

According to prosecutors, Brooks and Hinds were among five men who entered a home and shot Thomas before pushing his father into another room.

Thomas’s assassins reportedly tried to chop off his head, but aborted the plan because the chopper used was not sharp enough.

They then allegedly poured petrol on the house and body before setting the place on fire.

Prosecutors relied on the testimony of Thomas’ father, who indicated he knew his son’s killers from the community.
