Matthew Stafford Trade Thoughts, DeShaun Watson, Giants, more

If you’re a fan of the New York Giants and hope the team DeShaun Watson somehow gets away from the Texas Texans, your dream will probably have died with Matthew Stafford-Jared Goff, the huge success.

The Rams gave up Goff, a pick from the third round in 2021 and the first round in 2022 and 2023 in exchange for Stafford. The 32-year-old Stafford is fine, but he is seven years older and nowhere near the player that Watson is.

If the Detroit Lions could get it for Stafford, the Texans would get a lot more than that for Watson if they finally decided to trade him.

If you’re the Giants, that probably means Daniel Jones, three first rounds and one or more Day 2 picks.

Here’s an expected price from Houston:

My guess? It can go higher if you involve two or three teams in the bid.

My philosophy now is admittedly that if you see the quarterback, you can give the next ten years the chance to compete for titles, you do what you have to do. However, the Giants simply do not have much to give. Not least without destroying their ability to put a good team around Watson.

The Giants have no extra early selection. The New York Jets, for example, have six picks in the first 100 this year and an extra pick in the first round from the Jamal Adams trade next year. The Jets can trade and have the early few seasons still enough early choice to have a chance to put talent in Watson. The Giants would bankrupt their ability to add top talent.

As for the trade itself, it’s a beautiful “all in to win now” battle for the Rams. And in my opinion a good one. They have an excellent defense led by Aaron Donald, one of the best who has ever played. They have a leading head coach. Quarterback play held them back. They do not have to add much now to be a title candidate, they just need a quarter on championship. Stafford has a much better chance of being that than Goff.

The Lions? They charge up and there are only two seasons of guaranteed money on Goff’s deal. If he’s not the long-term solution in Detroit, he’s buying the Lions time to find that guy.

More things I think

  • I can’t get enough of the fact that the Giants apparently added the sacked coach, Tennessee, Jeremy Pruitt, to their coaching staff. Some people have been outraged since Pruitt was fired over the case when the school allegedly discovered serious NCAA violations on its watch. That does not make Pruitt a kind of monster to be treated like a pariah. It just makes him the latest man to rise above his real ability, proving that he could not win his program or keep control. Pruitt is apparently a very good defensive coach. If he can help Patrick Graham, that’s fine. As for me, everything that happened in Tennessee has nothing to do with it.
  • I think Chris Pflum, Joe DeLeone, Nick Falato, Mark Schofield and Emory Hunt [YouTube video recap] smashed our Senior Bowl coverage. All I had to do all week was sit back and press ‘publish’. Good job, gang!
  • I think the Giants sign veteran center Jonotthan Harrison to a reserve / futures contract with an unusual price tag of $ 2 million is an interesting move. I doubt it means competition for Nick Gates. That probably means the end for back center Spencer Pulley, as the Giants could save $ 2.725 million by cutting against the hood by cutting Pulley. It may not seem like a lot of money, but in a year when the cap drops, saving as much as $ 725,000 can be worth it.
