Matthew McConaughey talks about considering a Texas gubernatorial candidate

Can Texas one day be led by Governor McConaughey?

Al Roker decided on Friday to come under the rumors when he asked Oscar-winning actor Matthew McConaughey if he was considering a possible chance for governor in his homeland. The next Texas government election is in 2022.

“Look, that’s a very honorable consideration,” McConaughey said. “I’m considering it then? Of course it’s a wonderful thing and an honorable thing to be able to consider.

“What I have to choose for myself is that I want to be in a leadership role in the next chapter of my life. In what role will I be most useful? I do not know that it is in a political position, or if it “I’m a free agent. Maybe it’s me as a free agent. It’s something I’m working on personally, which’s what my position is most in a leadership role.”

McConaughey, 51, was born and raised in the Lone Star State, has a home there and graduated from the University of Texas in 1993.

Nor would he be the first actor to try to be a state governor, as Arnold Schwarzenegger showed in the 2003-11 role as California. Former President Ronald Reagan was an actor before he became governor of California in 1967, and pro-wrestler and “Predator” star Jesse Ventura was Minnesota’s governor from 1999-2003.

Matthew McConaughey and Al Roker paid a surprise visit to the actor’s old girlfriend, Jessie Norwood, 93, who wanted to know when the Oscar winner would perform for the governor of Texas. TODAY

Al discovered that McConaughey already had at least one avid voter when they visited Jessie Norwood. The 93-year-old woman from Texas met McConaughey years ago when he and his family were handing out food from Meals on Wheels at Thanksgiving.

The woman McConaughey calls “a really, very bright light” has not seen him for more than a year due to the pandemic. Now that she has been vaccinated, he and Al were able to pay her a surprise visit today, which immediately led to a question from her old friend.

“When are you going to run for governor?” she said.

“He asked me the same thing this morning!” McConaughey said about Al.

“I will vote for him!” Norwood said.

“I got one vote!” Answer McConaughey.

Even though he was visiting the “Dallas Buyers Club” star on his home field in Austin on Friday because of a much more urgent matter than McConaughey’s political ambitions – helping those crushed by last month’s winter storm. Many residents were left with destroyed and flooded homes of pipes bursting and bursting due to the weather conditions.

“It’s not like fires or tornadoes or a hurricane. You do not drive down the street and see the graphic problem off the street,” McConaughey said. ‘But go inside the front door of so many homes and businesses, now you see all the water damage that needs to be repaired, you see people who need clean water who do not have it.

McConaughey and his wife, Camila Alves, are doing their part to help by holding a virtual fundraiser called “We are Texas” at 9:00 PM EST on March 21 on McConaughey’s YouTube page.

The concert and benefit already has a Texas guest list featuring Chip and Joanna Gaines, Kelly Clarkson, Willie Nelson, the Jonas Brothers and Selena Gomez.

“Everyone I called within the first two minutes, ‘I’m in, I’m in,’ ‘he said. “I do not need to call anyone back. So Texas is really helping the people who are going to need it.”

McConaughey said he will be the host introducing the bands. He let Al take a double turn when he said he might be able to rap.

“I will not be able to help it,” he said before laughing. ‘I’m gonna have to rap somehow. I’ll rhyme something. I may not know it. But I’ll rhyme something. ‘

Before their time was up, Al just wanted to make sure McConaughey did not want to make any announcement about his future plans.

‘The announcement I want to make today is that on March 21, 2021 at 19:00 Central Time you will see on my YouTube channel a revival and recovery of people who stand together to help Texans get hurt and food and clean losing water and the ability to live in their own homes, ”he said. “We’re going to get together, we’ll help out our neighbors here in Texas. And we’re inviting the world to come in and help us too. It’s going to be a brilliant thing.”
