Matthew McConaughey leads Gov. Greg Abbott in new poll for Texas’ governor race despite moderate politics

While Matthew McConaughey is still considering a potential campaign for the governor of Texas, according to a new poll, he already has a leading edge over current Greg Abbott.

The 51-year-old Oscar winner had earlier said that a move to politics was a “real consideration” for him. The Texas resident has been teasing a potential action against Abbott for weeks, previously telling the host of ‘The Hugh Hewitt Show’ that ‘it would be more for the people than I would’, regardless of whether he pursued his career in let politics turn.

In a new poll conducted by The Dallas Morning News and the University of Texas at Tyler, it appears people were talking. McConaughey has an advantage over Abt with 45% of respondents saying they would cast their vote against 33% who would like Abbott. Meanwhile, 22% said they would vote for someone else.

The poll was conducted between 6 and 13 April among 1,126 registered voters in the state with a sample error of plus or minus 2.92%. Despite the smaller data set, the numbers speak volumes for the actor. He beat the two-time Republican by double figures, though he did nothing but bother a possible run.

“Matthew McConaughey gets a big boost from the tremendous recognition and recognition of the names for what he does to help Texans and to celebrate the successes of the state,” UT-Tyler political scientist Mark Owens told The Dallas Morning News said. “Most of our respondents know his story, but many are waiting to see how he opens his next chapter.”

MATTHEW MCCONAUGHEY ‘COULD’ INTEREST IN A FUTURE RUN FOR TEXAS GOVERNOR

Although the raw numbers look good for the actor “Dallas Buyers Club”, his politics may prevent him from tipping the scale in his favor in the state. About 56% of Republicans polled said they would cast their vote for Abbott, compared to 30% for McConaughey. Democrats meanwhile broke 66% to 8% in favor of the actor. However, more than twice as many Democratic primary voters – 51% – said they would prefer a progressive governor to a centrist.

McConaughey has criticized both parties before and is more of a moderate who condemns the entire political system rather than any party. In December, for example, he criticized what he called ‘illiberal’ and the ‘extreme’ right-wingers during an appearance in ‘Good Morning Britain’. This can be a problem because the poll suggests that the ideological division of the state favors someone who is more conservative or liberal.

The actor remarked on ‘The Hugh Hewitt Show’ in March that both sides of the aisle had lost ‘trust’ in each other, leading to ‘us not [having] confidence in ourselves, “which he said could eventually lead to ‘anarchy’.
