BOSTON (CBS) – According to a new study by a moving company, more people packed up and left Massachusetts last year than those who moved in. The Bay State is number 8 on the list of most of the United States in 2020 in the United Van Lines series.
About 57% of Massachusetts’ relocations for the company were outgoing, according to the study.
New Jersey made the list, followed by New York, Illinois, Connecticut and California.
“The Northeast region continues to have more residents leaving than moving in, and more than 60% of all relocations within the Northeastern U.S. are outgoing,” United Van Lines said.
According to the study, the coronavirus pandemic was part of the decision of many people, and the northeast was particularly hard hit in early 2020.
The study found that the Worcester-Fitchburg-Leominster region was one of the 20 largest metropolitan areas nationwide that experienced outbound migration – 64% of all relocations there were outbound.
Early 2020 census estimates found that while most of New England saw a population decline, New Hampshire saw modest gains.
