One of the most iconic moments of all Mass effect franchise is the suicide mission in Mass effect 2. In addition to a dozen heroes being recruited, players must put it all at stake in a life-or-death mission, where every mistake is costly. This is one of the highlights of the original trilogy, which touched deeply Mass effect 2end and transition to ME3.
The choice of the 12 characters was obviously not that simple. Recently, BioWare’s Mac Walters discussed the character concepts that the studio came up with in the early stages of the game, and he emphasized how these characters could not just be / would be expected to be discarded. Each character has a bit of an impact, and it had to be difficult to pick it out from a bunch of concepts and ideas. Some of these characters were adapted into others, others were completely recurring characters, and others just did not make it into the game. On the internet, several of these have attracted attention, like the crazy Quarian King, but the full discussion is here: every character concept we spotted.

Mass effect 2 cut content – characters
First of all, it should be noted that the character draft document shown in the video has apparently skipped a few, which means that there are probably more Mass effect 2 cut content and characters out there than just that. It is nonetheless interesting how so many concepts have been thought through, how these characters were cooked up to 12 and how these characters interacted between those who did make it into the franchise indeed.
Cerberus Superwoman – This character concept would become Miranda Mass effect 2.
Cerberus bodyguard – This character would become Jacob Taylor. Many of these concepts seem to make it special. Mass effect 2 dialogue implies that he and Miranda could have been romantic at some point, as suggested in this draft.
The Geth Frankenstein – This character would become Legion, but originally Legion has three personalities. This would have included memory cores and the collection of parts, which gave Legion’s actual conception more to the player than the original story.
The lost hologram – As an alternative concept related to Legion, this character would have been a piece of damaged Prosthesis hologram technology that looked like the real thing. Remarkably, this character would have revealed a civil rights movement in the Prosthetic Empire; his desire to be treated equally would apparently have led to a source of comic relief.
Design-a-Krogan Another alternative concept for Legion would have been a genetically engineered Korgan to mimic Shepard’s Paragon or Renegade choices. Parts of this concept brought it into play as Grunt.
The tank – Another concept attached to Legion would have been a ‘tank robot’, which could be improved with credits and exploration. This tank would have had an impact on travel through the Citadel, possibly an illegal AI, and suggested ideas / themes of slavery since Shepard owns the AI.
The Krogan War Queen A Krogan war queen is also mentioned in the document, although the exact concepts of this character have not been displayed.
Salarian Avenger – This character would have been an assassin pursued by Captain Kirrahe (known for his speech “Hold the Line”).
Quarian Rogue – It would have earned an abundance on his head while he was looking for information proving that the Quarian home world is now safe, or at least, the Geth himself was less threatening to the planet.
Hearty smuggler – This character would have helped Shepard get into a bad city’s underbelly while having a personality Star Wars‘Han Solo and Luke Skywalker.
Crazy Quarian King – This character would have operated like the mad Irishman of Brave heart. His entry contains a bit of an example of dialogue that got the character some attention online, namely ‘Should I Kill Geth?’ “Yes, you can kill Geth” “Excellent!”
Astronaut – A female human thief (25) tries to steal something of value, but lets Shepard ‘win’. This astronaut tends to steal ships and have good chopping skills.
The Fallen Paragon – It would be a character of any gender or race in Mass effect, after being a doctor who left a high position due to conflict. Discover in a “hive of foam and villains”, yet another Star Wars reference related to Mass effect 2, Shepard can influence this character in a paragonal or apostate way by misgoverning or taking revenge.
The Mad Bomber – During the suicide mission, the explosive abilities of this character would have come into play, but it turns out that it would depend on Shepard completing a specific mission to acquire a certain explosive.
The Convict – The 30-year-old man, the Convict, would have been one of the worst killers in the galaxy, and Shepard would have to break out of a high-security prison. Strikingly, elements of the Mad Bomber and The Convict in Zaeed and Jack in Mass effect.
The techno-hippie a 45-year-old Salarian, he would have been a technological savant with a “classic stoner” image.
Salary Killer – This concept was a ‘top choice’ and a more developed concept of the Salarian Avenger. This character is described as similar to Inigo Montoya in the Princess bride, with the character that could possibly drop Shepard before the suicide mission in pursuit of their target. This decision would depend on loyalty, which sounds a lot like Dragon Age Origins‘Zevran and his potential asshole in Denerim – based on his relationship with the protagonist.
Quarian infiltrator – A more detailed concept apparently evolving from the Quarian Rogue would have been this character Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid – in one character. This character would have been one of Mass effect‘s romances, one that would be turned off if Shepard became too apostate. Interestingly, elements of this character would be processed in the “Archangel” story arc and thus processed Mass effect 2see Garrus Vakarian.
The Master Thief – The Master Thief, an alternative concept to the Spacejacker, would have been a bit more of a common character type, it seems.
The Asari Ghost – This Specter, a 400-year-old Asari (equivalent to 30 people), would have hunted Shepard on Omega while he was looking for his ‘cheater’. More details on this were not shown in the document.
The Batar gear Players would have been tasked with hunting down a ‘Batar Terrorist’ to discover a geeky, socially awkward non-terrorist. His technical skills would have been extraordinary, yet this character would seemingly want a quiet, peaceful life. It makes them involved in Mass effect 2‘s suicide mission stretches a bit, which is possibly one of the reasons he was cut. Interestingly, there has never been a companion in the Battery in all 4 matches.
Fugitive Rebel – This former rebel leader, as a human, Salary or Quarian character, would have been a revolutionary. Players had to hunt him down because he avoided all detection of a failed rebellion, and his draw, it seems, Mass effect 2 Suicide mission would have been his ability to get in and out everywhere. His ‘big case’ could see the character rallying a bunch of smaller factions.
Mercenary – This crude and cruel tattooed Soldier of Fortune would be appointed as a ‘local guide’. If his loyalty were not maintained, he would have sold out Shepard to the Collectors.
Crusader – This crusader character is described as moody, cynical, prefers loneliness, and is darkly charismatic, yet sexually charged, despite it all. It would have been a new stranger belonging to a highly religious order. Their story would have had a siege weapon to be used in the suicide mission, and the Crusader ensured that Shepard used it for moral purposes. Elements of this character can be found in Mass effect 2see Thane Krios.
Mass Effect: Legendary Edition appears May 14 for PC, PS4 and Xbox One, with ‘targeted enhancements’ on PS5 and Xbox Series X.
