The parents of Maryland and the family of Jordan McNair have agreed on a $ 3.5 million settlement, his parents Marty McNair and Tonya Wilson announced Friday.
The amount has yet to be approved on Jan. 27 at a meeting of the Maryland Public Works Council, ESPN reported. The settlement has been approved by university officials and the attorney general’s office to pay out in full, according to WTOP News.

“It has been a long and painful battle, but we will try to find closure, even though it is a wound that will never heal,” Marty McNair and Tonya Wilson said in a joint statement.
“We are committed to honoring Jordan’s legacy so that his death was not in vain. This includes protecting student-athletes from all levels of competition, raising awareness, educating and preventing all heat-related illnesses, empowering student-athletes and the introduction of legislation nationwide, so that no parent has to wait so long for closure where their child has been treated unfairly or unfairly. ‘
The settlement comes more than two years after offensive lineman Terrapins Jordan McNair died of heat during a training session and the investigation into how the football program handles and practices his death during a heatwave before the start of the 2018 season.

In September 2018, an independent investigation found that coaches at the scene of the McNair collapse did not follow the proper procedures to help him. The investigation found 1 hour, 39 minutes between the time McNair collapsed and the ambulance left the football field.
McNair was admitted to the hospital on May 29, 2018 and passed away on June 13 of that year. He was 18.
The then coach DJ Durkin was later sacked and James Brady, chairman of the Board of Regents, was removed. Durkin later became a defense coordinator and coach at Ole Miss.

After the teenager’s death, the Jordan McNair Foundation was established to inform football coaches about the signs that a player is hitting a heat or being affected by the heat.
