Marvel’s Avengers Dev Doubles At Progress Level Nerf

Those still playing Marvel’s Avengers and the wider gaming community have not responded well to last week’s news that developer Crystal Dynamics will worsen the level of the game once the PlayStation 5 version launches on March 18, 2021. The studio has confirmed that it takes the amount of XP to increase your rank while working through the back half of the progression system, and many fans think it will increase the gravel needed to experience endgame content. Instead of reversing the decision based on negative feedback, the team has now committed to the commitment to follow the controversial update.

In an official Reddit post made by the developer, Crystal Dynamics is trying to make its decision clearer. The developer starts by setting up the scenario two to three times per mission, or ‘thing’ as Crystal Dynamics puts it. ‘What’s the problem? This is great, you might say. The problem we saw and heard was that you would immediately gain more skill points than you had time to review, apply and get used to before embarking on your next mission and around your next few to achieve levels. Hopefully you can see the issue here. “

The studio further explained that although he absolutely wants players to raise all their superheroes, but again it does not want the process to become overwhelming as you are overwhelmed with skill points awarded.

Therefore, we have ironed out the higher level curves to make it so that you are less likely to “thing” more than once or twice per mission on the higher side. There is so much variability in how fast you can acquire XP (level types, mission selection, etc.), but the end result of our tuning was meant to add about 3-5 hours to reach the maximum level. This means leveling up in a steady place around every 2-4 missions at the top. We see this as a way to reach clearer “thing” thresholds, and more time to get involved with each skill purchase.

Crystal Dynamics then said the upcoming patch would facilitate progress through the early levels and that taking down more powerful enemies would provide bonus XP. We would argue that a level progression system feels more overwhelming at first rather than halfway. Once you understand the skills tree and what it offers, the feeling can go away pretty quickly.

RPG progression systems have always worked as set up once the PS5 version of Marvel’s Avengers rolls around, but Crystal Dynamics’ reasoning does not add up. We do not know about you, but the acceptance always feels more overwhelming at the beginning (which will now be done even faster) rather than halfway. What do you think?
