Marvel opens MCU Madripoor website, quickly scrubs X-Men referrals

Marvel has launched a tourism website for Madripoor in the universe, which fans quickly noticed contains a number of Easter eggs referring to X-Men characters. The references have apparently now been removed. Comicbook spotted the new Explore Madripoor website, which started appearing on other Marvel websites as banner ads. Fans subsequently discovered that areas of the site could be unlocked with passwords, including one area where ships appeared in Madripoor’s Buccaneer Bay docks (which we saw in episode 3 of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier).

When the website was launched, the ship names contained names, some of which were direct references to characters from the X-Men, including Mystique (who appeared in Fox’s X-Men movies), and Daken (Wolverine’s son in the Marvel comics). Shang-Chi (which will soon have its own film) and the essential island of Krakow are also mentioned.

It seems that the Easter eggs could have been a step too far, as these presentations at the time of writing no longer contain ship names (and therefore no references outside the show). While it’s fun to think it’s because Marvel has given away too much, it’s probably more likely that it’s meant as a fun nod to other Marvel properties, and that it’s been removed to prevent anyone from getting the wrong idea. .Madripoor – the almost lawless island nation of Marvel history – was introduced to the MCU last week in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Although we may not have seen mutants in the MCU for some time, Madripoor has important ties to the X-Men comic books, and we described the introduction on screen as a first step in introducing them to the film universe.

Even if X-Men references are scrubbed, the Madripoor website does contain other neat Easter eggs, including wanted posters for the main characters of the program, phone and desktop backgrounds to find, and clips of CCTV recordings that another angle on the action scenes of the program. If you are interested in the program or the MCU, it is worth looking around.

If you want to see the hidden areas of the site, you can access the Buccaneer Bay area using the password ‘powerbroker’, and the Hightown Nightclub section with ‘sharoncarter’.
