Marquette fired Steve Wojciechowski for men’s basketball coach after the Golden Eagles posted a 13-14 record in his seventh season this season, the school announced Friday. Wojciechowski broke through 128-95 during his tenure with a record of 59-68 in Big East games.

The Golden Eagles have twice qualified for the NCAA Tournament under Wojciechowski’s leadership, but have not won a single game in a single game. The former Duke point guard and longtime Blue Devils assistant took over the position before the 2014-15 season after Buzz Williams left for Virginia Tech.

“After a thorough evaluation of our program over the past week, which included several conversations with Steve, I have come to the conclusion that now is the right time for a new leader of our in-depth program,” said Bill Scholl, an athletic director of Marquette, said in a statement. “I am confident that our history of success and our commitment to the development of young men who are leaders inside and outside the track will attract the highest quality of coaching talent. I want to thank Steve for his dedication to our student-athletes, and “We wish Steve, Lindsay, Jack and Charlie all the best for the future.”

The highlight of the program under Wojciechowski took place during the 2018-19 season when Marquette started 23-4 and reached the no. Rose 10 in the AP Top 25 poll before winning a No. 5 series in the NCAA Tournament. But that season ended with six losses in the team’s last seven games, including an NCAA Tournament in the first round against Murray State.

This year’s group showed flashes of promise with non-conference victories over Wisconsin and North Carolina. But a young position led by first-year forward Dawson Garcia and DJ Carton, second guard, struggled to gain momentum in the Great East.

Marquette made eight consecutive NCAA tournaments between 2006 and 13 under former coaches Tom Crean and Williams.
