SEATTLE (AP) – Left-handed James Paxton is leaving the first start of his second season with the Mariners due to discomfort in his elbow after throwing just 24 spots against the White Sox on Tuesday night.

The Mariners announced the initial diagnosis at Paxton two innings after leaving the game. Paxton remained in the excavation to watch after leaving the hill.

Paxton put on make-up after throwing a fast-paced 92-yard ball to Chicago’s Andrew Vaughn, with one out in the second innings. Mariners manager Scott Servais and a coach immediately come to the hill while Paxton bends his hands on his knees. After some discussion, Paxton steps down and is replaced by Nick Margevicius.

Paxton, who has spent the past two seasons with the New York Yankees after playing his first six years for Seattle, returned to the Mariners in February on a $ 8.5 million one-year deal.

He underwent surgery in February 2020 to repair a herniated disc and remove a cyst from his back. He went 2-3 last year with an ERA of 6.64 in five starts for New York before being strained with a left forearm.

Paxton could earn an extra performance bonus of $ 1.5 million for games started: $ 150,000 each for six to ten and $ 750,000 more than starting 11-22.
