March Feature Drop makes 5G possible with DSDS on Pixel 5

Although Pixel devices have only one physical SIM card slot, you can add and use an eSIM with Dual SIM Dual Standby at the same time. With the launch, DSDS on the Pixel 5 and 4a dropped 5G users to 4G connectivity, but yesterday’s security solution enables 5G support.

Android 12 Developer Preview 1 was the first to allow 5G and DSDS on the Pixel 5, as well as Pixel 4a 5G. Google has been working since November to add support to Android 11, but it is only now being implemented with the March security level.

This add-on was not mentioned by Google, but there are some reports today that this capability is now available. In turn, Google has yet to update its support document on the matter.

When two SIMs are installed, ‘5G’ will now work (and appear in the status bar) without temporarily disabling one in Settings or by physical removal. Although dual SIM usage is limited, those who need it may end up using the key cellular capability of their new phone.

On 4G, DSDS has been available since the Pixel 3a in 2019, and fortunately owners do not have to wait until Android 12’s late 2021 public release or public beta.

DSDS and 5G make the March feature a little more interesting, and some users complain about the lack of major changes beyond the Recorder backup and internet access. Other features like underwater photography require an expensive case or a $ 79 Pixel Stand for the enhanced sleeping experience.
