A complete guide to events taking place during March 2021 in Pokémon GO. Highlights include new GO Rocket Special Research, Therian form legendary in raids, a surprising Mega-evolution and 4 not yet too detailed events.
In addition, Niantic will test the Bonus Hours as a new format during March and there are changes to XL Candy. Many of the events coincide with the start of a new Pokémon GO season – Season of Legends – so be sure to read about it as well.
New Team GO Rocket Special Research
Giovanni and Team GO Rocket are back, and they’ve got more Shadow Pokémon – including Shadow Legendary Pokémon. Giovanni uses the following Shadow Legendary Pokémon at different times:
- March 2021: Shadow Articuno
- April 2021: Shadow Zapdos
- May 2021: Shadow Moltres
The new Team GO Rocket Special Research will be available on Sunday 28 February 2021 at 12:00 local time. Play this season’s new Team GO Rocket Special Research to earn a Super Rocket Radar and take down Giovanni! At the beginning of each month, there will be other opportunities to earn Super Rocket Radars, so stay tuned for more information!
March breakthrough meeting for research
From Monday 1 March 2021, at 13:00 PST (GMT −8) to Thursday, 1 April 2021, at 13:00 PDT (GMT −7), you will encounter Gible in research breakthrough encounters.
March Pokémon Collegiate
Pokémon Spotlight Hour takes place every Tuesday at 6pm local time. Each spotlight has a different Pokémon and a special bonus.
March bonus hours
Niantic will test Bonus Hours during March. These tests take place on the mentioned Thursdays at 18:00 local time, and each has a unique bonus:
New Legendary Pokémon in Five Star Attacks
The following legendary Pokémon appear in five-star attacks in March:
March Mega Raids
- Mega Blastoise, Mega Pidgeot and Mega Ampharos will be presented from Monday 1 March 2021 at 08:00 to Tuesday 16 March 2021 at 10:00 local time in Mega Raids.
- Mega Houndoom, Mega Abomasnow and a surprising Mega-Evolved Pokémon will appear from Tuesday 16 March 2021 in Mega Raids at 10:00 local time.
March Community Day
Join us on Saturday, March 6, 2021 from 11:00 to 17:00 local time for a fiery community day with Fletchling.
Develop Fletchinder (the developed form of Fletchling) during the event or up to two hours later to get a Talonflame that knows the attack Incinerate.

Candy XL Updates
Niantic introduces some updates to Candy XL that will help make this source more enjoyable in Pokémon GO:
- If you trade Pokémon, you can reward a Candy XL for the Pokémon you traded. The chance of receiving a Candy XL will increase the distance between Pokémon traps.
- If you walk away with your Buddy Pokémon, you can now earn a Candy XL.
- To capture Legendary, Mythical or evolved Pokémon, you will now be guaranteed with Candy XL.

A Special Raid Weekend Event with Legendary Pokémon takes place on Saturday, March 27, 2021 to Sunday, March 28, 2021.
