According to police and reports, police identified the man who was pepper sprayed by Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler over the weekend as a partner at a local law firm.
A police report released Tuesday said Cary Cadonau, peppered with Wheeler, after he left the Democratic mayor Sunday night, accusing him of not wearing a mask. He also allegedly tried to obtain a copy of the mayor’s receipt and oversight material from his time in the restaurant, police said.
No charges were filed in the incident. Cadonau did not immediately respond to Fox News’ request for comment.

Wheeler ate in a tent area from 2009 to 2013 with Sam Adams, who served one term as mayor of Portland. The men walked to their cars as Cadonau approached, unmasking and getting close to the mayor’s face while filming with his phone. , according to police reports.
Wheeler told the man of the current COVID-19 regulations, which allow people to take off their masks to eat or drink, according to a statement the mayor gave to police.
“He accused me of sitting in a restaurant without a mask,” the report said. “I was in the tent area of a restaurant sitting at a table and told him that the current Covid regulations allow people to take off their mask for the purpose of eating and drinking.”

The mayor’s statement continued: “He then accused me of other things for which I indicated that he did not understand the rules and would probably understand better if he confronted people about it.”
Wheeler said the man was standing within a foot or two of him, and Wheeler was concerned about his safety and COVID-19. Wheeler told the man to ‘go back’ and that he was carrying pepper spray, which he would use if necessary. When the man did not listen, the mayor said he sprayed him in the eyes.
“He looked surprised and stood back,” Wheeler told police. “He made a remark like, ‘I can not believe you’re just spraying me with pepper. ‘
Adams, whose statement to police is in line with the mayor’s, suggested to Wheeler that he leave for safety. Before doing so, Wheeler said he threw a bottle of water at the man so he could wash his eyes, he told police.
Cadonau told police on Monday he did not want to discuss the case because he is a lawyer. He said the mayor should be “held accountable”, but read the police report.
Cadonau was asked why he tried to get recordings of the restaurant in the Hillsdale neighborhood of Portland, as well as Wheeler’s food and drink vouchers from the bar, according to the report.
