If you do not know how to use the hearing setting on an iPhone, you are not alone.
The feature, which basically turns your phone into a live listening device, goes viral on TikTok. This is largely due to user @brycenor, who explained how you can use the feature to spy on your friends.
The TikToker shared the iPhone hack in response to a current trend in the app, asking users to reveal something that ‘feels illegal to know’.
“I do not feel it should be illegal, but it is shady,” @brycenor said at the beginning of his clip.
As @brycenor explains in his video, the hearing setting can be used with AirPods to listen to others’ conversations – even when you’re not in the room. Setting up the feature is as simple as opening the settings app of your iPhone.
From there, select the “Control Center” option and click “Audience.” Then you can turn on the feature in the control center of your phone, insert your AirPods and leave your phone in another room. As @brycenor puts it: “You can leave it in any room. You can listen to what anyone is saying at any time. ”
Some TikTok users were excited to discover the feature, but many were scared by it.
“Do not trust people with AirPods, understand it,” wrote one user.
“Why did my heart rate just rise,” another wrote.
“It’s dangerous,” another added.
Others have pointed out that the hearing impairment may actually be worse for the person using it.
“I already think EVERYONE is talking about me,” one user wrote.
“Nope. Do not want to hurt my feelings,” another added.
As some users have noticed, the hearing aid is actually designed as an accessibility feature for iPhone users – especially those who are hard of hearing. By adjusting the background noise, the “live listen” tool enables users to hear conversations more easily.
