‘Man’ leads the Golden Globe nominees by 6; Netflix dominates

NEW YORK (AP) – After a year in which the pandemic nearly emptied movie theaters, Netflix dominated nominations for the 78th Golden Globe Award on Wednesday, with David Fincher’s “Mank” leading film nominees with six nods and “The Crown” the top of all television series.

The Globes, which has been delayed for about two months due to the coronavirus, on Wednesday tried to gather some of the usual awards of the awards in a largely virtual awards season without the glare of the red carpet on which the Globes annual festival was held word. And perhaps to account for the otherwise lack thereof, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has garnered nominations for two lavish eras of high royalty – both the Hollywood variety (“Mank” dramatizes the making of “Citizen Kane”) and the British type.

‘Mank’, about co-author ‘Citizen Kane’, Herman Mankiewicz, received nominations for best film, drama; best actor for Gary Oldman; best director for Fincher, best supporting actor for Amanda Seyfried; best score; and best screenplay for Jack Fincher, the director’s father who penned the screenplay before he died in 2003.

Netflix, which was also at the top of the studios at the Globes last year, led with 42 directions, of which 22 were in film categories and 20 in television. No other studio was nearby.

“The Crown” also garnered six nominations, including Best Series, Drama and Acting Nod for Olivia Colman and Josh O’Connor. The last season of ‘Schitt’s Creek’ had five nominations, while Netflix’s ‘Ozark’ (four nods) and ‘The Queen’s Gambit’ (two nods) also contributed to the streamer’s total.

Aaron Sorkin’s “The Trial of the Chicago 7” – which is also a Netflix release – took second place with five nominations, including a nod for best film, drama; best director and best screenplay for Sorkin; accompanist for Sacha Baron Cohen; and best song.

The other nominees for best film in the drama category were Chloe Zhao’s “Nomadland”, Emerald Fennell’s “Promising Young Woman” and Florian Zeller’s “The Father”.

Netflix does not report box office figures, and ‘Nomadland’ and ‘The Father’ are still opening after a qualifying series in theaters. The category’s total box office – a historic low of about $ 265,000 – is thus due to ‘Promising Young Woman’.

A year after no female nominees for Best Director – or Best Nominal Film for any Direction by a Woman – were nominated, the HFPA nominated more female filmmakers than before.

Regina King (“One Night in Miami”), Zhao and Fennell were nominated for Best Director along with Sorkin and Fincher.

The nominees for best music or comedy film are: “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm”; “Hamilton,”; “Music”; “Palm Springs”; “The prom.”

The nominees for Best Picture, Foreign Language, are: “Another Round”; “La Llorona”; “Life ahead”; “Minari”; “Two of us.”

The nominees for lead actor in a drama film are: Riz Ahmed, “Sound of Metal”; Chadwick Boseman, “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”; Anthony Hopkins, “The Father”; Gary Oldman, “Mank”; Tahar Rahim, “The Mauritanian.”

The nominees for actress in a drama film are: Frances McDormand, “Nomadland”; Viola Davis, “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”; Carey Mulligan, “promising young woman”; Vanessa Kirby, “Pieces of a Woman”; Second Day, “The United States vs. Billie Holiday.”

Sarah Jessica Parker and Taraji P. Henson presented the nomination announcement Wednesday morning.

The Globes is usually the first major performance of Hollywood’s awards season, ending with the awarding of the best winner of the Oscars. They will retain the distinction, despite being delayed for almost two months, after an increase in virus cases in recent months pushed the Grammy Awards to March.

More than perhaps any other award, the Globes depend on a cavalcade of stars – something that will not materialize when the awards are presented on February 28 in a ceremony hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association said Tuesday that the Globes – usually a bubbly meal with liquid drinks – are being held two-coast for the first time.. Fey is the host of the Rainbow Room in New York and Poehler of the normal home of the awards, the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California, and candidates are expected to appear from locations around the world.

This year’s Globes have been postponed by almost two months due to the pandemic and to adapt to the delayed Oscars. This is on April 25th. Last year’s Golden Globes culminated in awards for ‘1917’ and ‘Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood’. The television broadcast, hosted by Ricky Gervais, failed to meet the overall ratings trend for awards, recording an average of 18.3 million viewers, with 2% less than the previous year.
