Man fired on officers shot in Coweta County, deputies say – WSB-TV Channel 2

COWETA COUNTY, Ga. The GBI has been called in to investigate an officer-involved shooting in Newnan.

Delegates in Coweta County say a man linked to another crime started shooting at them at International Park. Delegates fired back and hit the suspect.

The man, who was identified as Mario Clarke, was taken to hospital. He remains in a critical condition. No deputies were injured.

Police said someone reported a stolen car at a Racetrac on Amlajack Boulevard shortly after midnight.

After a brief chase, the stolen car stopped and the suspect ran from the car to the forest near the interstate. The victim was able to identify the suspect as Clarke and warrants were taken out for his arrest.

Marked patrol cars keep pace with an area where Clarke was last seen. Delegates spotted him around 12:00 p.m. He runs away from deputies again.

Uniformed police and K9 officers located the area. Eventually, a deputy found Clarke near some soccer fields.

The deputy gets out of his car and Clarke shoots at him and hits his vehicle. The deputy shot Clarke back and wounded him. Clarke was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital. The GBI said it is currently in a critical condition.

Tell a viewer Channel 2 the Hello Fresh factory at International Park was under lock and key. Rumors initially circulated that there was an active shooter, but the shipment of Coweta County 911 was confirmed. Channel 2 action news that there was no active shooter, but only a search for a suspect.

Our photographer at the scene saw a medical helicopter take off from softball fields near the facility and several police vehicles blocked the road.

At least one police vehicle has bullet holes in the windshield.

Clarke is the same man accused of shooting his father last month. The surveillance video shows the father and son both with weapons in front of their house.

According to officials, Clarke’s father called 911 and said he was shooting at him. Police have charged Clarke with aggravated assault.
