Man believes property stolen by homeowner in Michigan steals

VAN BUREN COUNTY, MI – A homeowner in Van Buren County allegedly killed a man in the process of stealing their property Sunday, police said.

Troops responded to a report of major problems in the 42nd Street area of ​​Decatur Township on Sunday, March 21, at 6:23 p.m., the Michigan State Paw Paw Post said in a news release.

According to an initial investigation, two people called police to their residence to intervene in a theft that was going on, police said.

Prior to the arrival of the troops, police said both homeowners encountered the suspect outside their home.

One of the homeowners shot the suspect, who was identified by police as 28-year-old Jeffrey Horton, from Decatur. Horton died at the scene after both homeowners and police tried to make life-saving efforts.

Police have not identified or arrested the homeowners, and the incident is being further investigated.

A report that includes forensic analysis will be sent to the state prosecutor in Van Buren County for investigation to determine whether complaints will be filed.

State police at the scene received assistance from the sheriff of Van Buren province and the police station of Decatur.
