Major newspapers mention women to lead the coverage of the Biden White House

CNN has named Kaitlan Collins as White House chief correspondent, replacing Jim Acosta, who will be the network’s anchor and chief correspondent.

ABC said Cecilia Vega would be the White House correspondent; The Washington Post named Ashley Parker the White House office; Nancy Cordes will be CBS News’ chief correspondent in the White House; and Kristen Welker will be a co-head of the White House correspondent for NBC with Peter Alexander.

Journalist Yamiche Alcindor has been covering the White House for the PBS NewsHour since 2018, and she will continue to do so during the Biden government.

“I’ve always thought women belong in the front row – whether it’s in the White House information room or any other,” Collins said. “I am delighted to be among this formidable group of reporters.”

The list includes especially colored women, including Welker, who in October last year became the first black woman to moderate a presidential debate on the general election since 1992.

“It’s clear that diversity in all forms, including gender and race, is needed to tell the stories of our generation in the most accurate and fair way,” Alcindor told CNN Business. “The American people are best served by a media that looks like the collage of experiences and backgrounds that make up this country.”

Ann Compton, a former correspondent for ABC News in the White House, noted how the balance between the sexes in the information room has changed. ‘A generation ago, it might have been a blessing to be the only woman – I really stood out from the crowd. ‘

Compton added: “The day will come – must come – when it is not news that the majority in the public eye in any profession is female.”

From Wednesday, more women will be represented on both sides of the chair, as Biden’s communications team, according to the incoming government, is fully staffed by women – a first in American history.

Biden’s press secretary, Jen Psaki, is holding the administration’s first press briefing on camera on the day of the inauguration.
