Maine reports 189 new cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday

Maine reported 189 new cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday. There were no additional deaths.

Tuesday’s figures reflect Maine’s continued tendency to record a higher number of cases compared to two weeks – or one incubation period – ago.

The seven-day average daily new cases were 191.3 on Tuesday, compared to 173 two weeks ago and 164.1 a month ago.

Maine is seeing an increase in cases in Kennebec County, where there are now an average of 2.1 cases per 10,000 people in seven days, an increase of 63 percent over the past week. Piscataquis County had the highest infection rate in Maine with 2.6 cases per 10,000 people, but rates there have dropped by 25 percent in the past week.

Cumberland County is relatively quiet, with 1.7 cases per 10,000 people, but only an increase of 4 percent. York County also has 1.7 cases per 10,000 people, but has seen a 23 percent increase in the past week.

Dr. Nirav Shah, director of the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention, will notify the media today at 2 p.m.

Meanwhile, Maine continues to vaccinate as many people as possible, part of the strategy to prevent a new boom. Since the pandemic began, Maine has recorded 47,388 positive cases of COVID-19 and 725 deaths.

Updated vaccinations for Tuesday were not immediately available, but the latest vaccination data show that 323,049 Maine residents – representing 24 percent of the population – received at least the first dose on Monday.

Another mass vaccination center, operated by Central Maine Healthcare, will open Wednesday at the Auburn Mall. The site is available on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 8am to 6pm and will be able to handle 1,000 patients a day.

The Auburn Mall location joins the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor, Scarborough Downs, Portland Expo and the former Marshalls in Sanford as massive vaccination sites. On Friday, the Piscataquis County Ice Arena in Dover-Foxcroft opens as a mass vaccination center operated by Northern Light Health.

Maine is one of 17 states that have seen an increase in average daily cases over the past two weeks, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.

Dr Rochelle Walensky, director of the American CDCD, said in a media conference on Monday that she was concerned about a nationwide increase in COVID-19 cases after seeing negative trends in several European countries.

‘Each of these countries has disadvantages as we have now, and each has taken an upward trend after ignoring well-known mitigation strategies. “They simply took their eye off the ball,” said Walensky.

Currently, 86 people are hospitalized with COVID-19 in Maine, including 26 in intensive care.
