Low in virus cases, deaths, quarantines in Taiwan 5,000 to the COVID-19 hospital group

Taiwanese health authorities quarantine 5,000 people while searching for the source of two new coronavirus cases linked to a hospital.

Officials said Monday they could not yet determine how a man and woman became infected after a brief hospital stay at Taoyuan General Hospital, in the city of Taoyuan, just outside the capital of Taiwan. The man remained in the hospital for three days due to health problems not related to COVID-19 while his wife was caring for him.

Those asked to be quarantined include patients discharged from the hospital from January 6 to 19, and their caregivers.

Taiwan is on higher alert after the latest local grouping, which has now seen 15 cases from the hospital in Taoyuan.

Taiwan was applauded for its swift and sustained efforts to contain COVID-19, with just seven deaths and fewer than 900 confirmed cases, despite its proximity to China, where the pandemic began.
