The Louisiana Department of Health reported 5,602 more confirmed cases of coronavirus and another 47 confirmed deaths in the afternoon on Sunday.
In Sunday’s update, the state reported its largest number of COVID-positive patients in the hospital since April 17, when the state had 1,868 COVID-positive patients.
The number of hospitalizations has increased by 102 since Thursday to 1,833. The number of patients needing ventilators has increased by two.
According to the agency’s dashboard, there are also 29,979 total “probable” cases of coronavirus in Louisiana.
Due to the New Year’s holiday, no data was released on Friday.

Note: The staff of the Advocate and The Times-Picayune calculate the daily number of cases and the confirmed deaths increase based on the difference between the total number of today’s and yesterday’s confirmed cases of coronavirus and deaths. The Louisiana Department of Health is releasing a daily number of cases on its dashboard that include possible cases, as indicated by a positive antigen test. The number of cases may differ from the one listed here.

Louisiana will begin opening Phase 1 again on May 15-16 and then move to Phase 2 on June 5, Louis Bel Edwards, Louis Bel. Edward’s Phase 2 restrictions in Louisiana extended twice in August before moving the state to Phase 3 on September 11th. the state again at the end of November to an adjusted phase 2.
