It’s no secret that 2020 was devastating for many businesses. In LA, the distribution of federal relief loans was both extremely limited and extremely unequal. The city’s efforts to provide relief was not much better.
Many businesses were forced to take care of themselves. Talk to local entrepreneurs, my colleague Emily Guerin found that those who able to turn offering their operations or a new product are more likely to stay afloat; those who could not, or did not, had a greater likelihood of closure.
For example, like many other local eateries, the owners of Wanderlust Creamery in Santa Monica quickly switched to online ordering and sent belly ice cream across the country. Other restaurants open ghost kitchens. In fact, pandemic-related innovation on and on and on.
Yet most hope to return to their normal business practices soon – like everything these days, it’s just a question of when.

LA’s Surge: LA County health officials reported Tuesday 11,994 new cases of coronavirus and 288 new deaths.
The housing crisis: New LA City Councilman Kevin de León a motion announced for LA to double housing for the homeless by 2025 to 50,000 units.
The vaccine: Government Gavin Newsom May Adjust Recommendation of Disease Control and Prevention Centers Expand access to COVID-19 vaccines to all 65 years and older, in an effort to expedite vaccination.
Money matters: Working groups representing some employees in the city have agreed to a preliminary agreement it will prevent layoffs and looting over the next six months.
Policing the police: The details of LAUSD’s plan to the budget of his school police department cut is still in a limbo after six months.
