London officer arrested for missing woman

A police officer in London was arrested on Tuesday for the disappearance of a young woman who disappeared in the city about a week ago.

Metropolitan police said they had arrested one of their own in connection with the case of Sarah Everard, who went missing on March 3 after leaving a friend’s home.

The 33-year-old marketing manager was last seen at around 21:30 that evening via a doorbell camera in Clapham, in south-west London, reports the BBC.

The male police officer was arrested in a house in Kent, outside London. A woman was also arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender, police said.

Detective Chief Inspector Katherine Goodwin called the arrest in the investigation a major development and said authorities were doing everything in their power to find Everard.

“We will continue to work at full speed on this investigation,” said Assistant Commissioner Nick Ephgrave. “But the fact that the detainee is a serving Metropolitan police officer is shocking and disturbing.”

“I understand that there will be significant public concern, but it is essential that the investigation team be given the time and space to continue with their work,” he added.
