Liz Phair has expanded her next album Sober. The MP arrives on June 4 via Chrysalis. Today (April 14), Phair shared the album’s latest single, titled “Spanish Doors.” Listen to it below and browse to find it Sobertheir playlist and album art.

“Spanish Doors” is about the breakup of a beautiful life, when everything you counted on is suddenly thrown up, ‘as Phair puts it in a press release. She added:

I got inspiration from a friend going through a divorce, but the actions in the lyrics are my own. I like to go into hiding in the bathroom when everyone around you is having a good time, but your life just falls apart. You look at yourself in the mirror and wonder who you are now, shadows of doubt creeping into your eyes. Just a few moments ago you were a whole confident person and now you are wondering how you will ever get the magic back.

Sober is Phair’s first album with new material in 11 years, after 2010’s Funstyle. The new LP contains tracks “Good Side” and “Hey Lou” that were previously shared. The record was produced by Phair’s longtime collaborator Brad Wood, who also worked on it. Exile in Guyville, whiplash, en white chocolate space eggs. ‘I have my inspiration for Sober “By deepening an early era of my music development, my art school years were constantly listening to Art Rock and New Wave music on my Walkman,” said Phair. “The English Beat, The Specials, Madness, REMs Automatic for the People, Yazoo, The Psychedelic Fur, Talking Heads, Velvet Underground, Laurie Anderson, and the Cars. The city came alive for me as a young person, and the straps in my headphones give me the courage to go exploring. ‘

Phair added:

Sober can go about partying. It can be about self-delusion. It can be about the first chase of love or, in fact, any state of mind that allows you to escape from reality for a while and exist on a happier level. It is not self-destructive or out of control; it is as simple as the cycle of dreaming and waking up. That’s why I chose to symbolize Sober with a crossroads, with a street nameplate. It is best described as a simple pivot point. When you meet your ‘is’ self again after a period of sobriety, there is a deep recognition and emotional relief that floods you, reminding you that there is more to life, more to reality and to your own soul than what you are consciously aware of. But if you achieve too much of the good thing, or you suffer too little hunger, you lose the critical balance.
