Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) suggested Sunday morning that former President Donald Trump may have deliberately provoked more violence during the rioting riot last month when he attacked then-Vice President Mike Pence on Twitter when thousands of his followers stormed the US Capitol.
A day after the Wyoming Republican Party called Cheney and asked her to resign to vote to accuse Trump of his role in inciting the January 6 riots, the third-place Republican appears on Fox News Sunday to declare that she will not retire.
‘As I have explained and will explain supporters across the state and voters across the state, the oath I took to the Constitution forced me to vote for accusation and it does not tend to be biased, it does not’ under political pressure, ”Cheney told Fox News anchor Chris Wallace. “This is the most important oath we’re taking, and that’s why I will stick to it and I will continue to fight for all the issues that are so important to us in Wyoming.”
The sense of her state party comes on the heels of the Republicans’ attempt to remove her from the House as Republican conference chairwoman last week. The Wyoming congressman survived when her colleagues voted 145-61 for her to remain in office.
Cheney also took a turn at the GOP and Trump for proclaiming the ‘Big Lie’ that the election was ‘stolen’ by President Joe Biden and falsely claiming that Trump’s rioters were not responsible for the deadly violence at the Capitol .
“People in the party are mistaken,” she said. ‘They believe that BLM and antifa were behind the case that happened here at the Capitol. This is simply not the case, not true and we are going to have a lot of work to do. ”
“People are being lied to,” she continued. “The extent to which President Trump, for months to January 6, spread the notion that the election was stolen or that the election was inappropriate was a lie. And people need to understand that. We must make sure that we as Republicans are the party of truth. ”
Cheney, the highest-ranking Republican in the House who voted for Trump’s accusation, said the “biggest single threat to our public is a president who would put his own interests above the Constitution,” and said Trump “did everything.” which he was able to steal The election and it ends with the attack on the Capitol.
Under pressure from Wallace whether she would vote to convict Trump if she was in the Senate, Cheney said she would “listen to the testimony” while quoting Trump’s Jan. 6 tweet about Pence.
“People want to know exactly what the president is doing,” she said. “For example, they want to know if the tweet he sent to name Vice President Pence a coward while the attack was going on, or if the tweet, for example, was a deliberate attempt to provoke violence.”
“There are a lot of questions that need to be answered and there will be many, many criminal investigations into every aspect of this and everyone involved, as it should be, but I stand by my statement,” Cheney concluded. “We have never seen this kind of assault by a President of the United States on another branch of government, and it can never happen again.”
The tweet, which was sent by Trump while the uprising was raging out of control, said: “Mike Pence did not have the courage to do what needed to be done to protect our country and our Constitution, which gave States the chance to confirm a correction sets facts, not the fraudulent or inaccurate ones they previously asked to confirm.
