Rep. Jerry Nadler, chairman of the House judiciary, said in his remarks that the rioters who stormed the Capitol would be brought to justice. Amid accusations from some members of Congress that other members may have had riots, he said accomplices on the floor would also be held accountable.
“We will bring the rioters to justice. Their accomplices in this house will be held accountable,” Nadler said. “But today we must first focus on the biggest threat: President Trump.”
Rep. Adam Schiff, D-California, who was the general manager for Trump’s last indictment, said that America had endured a civil war, world wars, the Great Depression and now “a Trumpist and white nationalist uprising”, but the people will gain the upper hand. because of the Americans, it is patriotic enough to repair it.
“It’s one of those moments,” Schiff said. “Enough.”
Rep. James Clyburn, DS.C., argued that although Republicans demanded unity and healing, it was the president who refused to recognize Biden’s victory, which led to a violent transition of power.
“The president’s refusal to participate in the peaceful transfer of power and his role in last week’s incitement to violence poses an existential threat. This threat must be eradicated immediately,” Clyburn said.
Rep. Jamie Raskin, MD, co-sponsor of the indictment, warned of future threats to lawmakers if the president is not held accountable, emphasizing, “All of us in this room could have died by now.”
