Live Updates: Increasing GOP Senators Trial Accused of Trump

An increasing number of Republican senators say they are opposed to holding an indictment for former President Trump.

Senator Marco Rubio, R-Fla., Told Fox News Sunday that the upcoming trial on Trump is “stupid” and damaging to the US, even though he is responsible for part of what happened “at the US Capitol on Jan. 6.

“Well, first of all, I think the trial is stupid. It is counterproductive, ‘Rubio said on Sunday. “We already have a blazing fire in this country, and it’s like taking a bunch of gasoline and throwing it on top of the fire.”

QUICK FACTS

    • Republican senators – who will serve as jurors in the trial – argue Trump’s legal defense, as during last year’s first indictment.
    • Arguments in the Senate hearing will begin the week of February 8th.

House Democrats will send the charge of ‘incitement to rebellion’ to the Senate on Monday night. They hope that strong Republican condemnations of Trump after the January 6 riot will translate into a conviction and a separate vote to keep him from holding office.
