Two new reports from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention detail that received COVID-19 vaccines during the first month of the U.S. vaccination program. Of the 13 million Americans who received at least one dose between December 14 and January 14, 63% were women and 55% were 55 years or older, according to reports released Monday.
The new data showed a worrying trend in nursing homes. While nearly 78% of residents have received at least one dose of vaccine, only 38% of staff have been vaccinated, which according to the CDC suggests barriers to vaccination for staff that need to be ‘overcome’.
The racial division of those vaccinated is less clear. As several jurisdictions do not report a division by race, information is missing about about half of the people vaccinated. Based on the available data, 60% of the people who received vaccinations were white, 12% Spanish and 5% black, reports the CDC.
As vaccination continues, it is critical to ensure effective and equitable administration to individuals in each successive vaccine category, especially those at highest risk for infection and serious health outcomes, ‘the CDC said.
