Listeria outbreak linked to some types of fresh, soft cheeses, says CDC

The Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) has issued a warning due to a listeria outbreak associated with certain types of fresh, soft cheeses.

“Do not eat fresh and soft cheeses in Spanish style (such as queso fresco, queso blanco and queso panela) until we identify a specific type or brand that makes people sick.” the CDC mentioned in the warning.

There were seven diseases, all of which led to hospitalizations, in four states, including New York and Connecticut. The other states are Maryland and Virginia.

You have a higher risk of serious Listeria disease if you are pregnant, 65 years or older, or have a weakened immune system due to certain medical conditions or treatments, the CDC said.

Symptoms include headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions, in addition to fever and muscle aches.
