LG unveils new QNED Mini LED TVs for CES 2021

It’s almost a new year, and LG is ready to celebrate with yet another new TV technology acronym: QNED Mini LED TV, a brand new series of televisions to be unveiled at LG’s Virtual CES Expo on January 11, 2021. QNED TVs feature quantum dots and LG’s NanoCell technology in their screens for enhanced brightness and color reproduction, but more importantly, these new TVs are also powered by up to 30,000 mini-LEDs that add more dimming zones than ever to this premium range.

Despite the rumors surrounding these new QNED TVs, LG has made sure that they are still a step below the company’s flagship OLED TVs, which offer an advanced display technology that can independently turn on and off each pixel for the leading contrast between the brightest and darkest images on the screen. Although mini-LEDs are smaller than traditional taillights, they are not ’emissive displays’ like OLED and Samsung’s new MicroLED technology, so they can not create the same contrast.

Still, the new QNED TVs could be a hit for those looking for a better alternative to OLED screens. We can also expect QNED TVs to be cheaper than LG’s comparable OLED TVs. Their most direct competitors today are TCL’s 8 Series Mini LED TVs and Samsung’s QLED TVs.

“Our new QNED Mini LED range is a first-class home entertainment option that expands and enhances the LCD TV space, giving consumers another tremendous choice,” said Nam Ho-jun, senior vice president of R&D at LG’s Home Entertainment Company, said.

LG says that its 2021 QNED series will include a total of 10 new 4K and 8K models, for a wide range of screen sizes and price points. The top QNED TV, an 86-inch 8K sample, has up to 2500 dimmable zones for exceptional contrast, along with (we expect) impressive brightness and color reproduction, thanks to the mix of other display techniques such as quantum dots. To put things in perspective, this equates to as many as ten times the number of dimming zones you will see on traditional LED TVs.

At its virtual Expo on January 11, LG unveiled a live display of its new 86-inch 8K QNED TV, which the company hopes will give it a head start in the market over competitors such as Samsung and TCL. We’ll have to wait and see if QNED can be proud of the other amazing Mini-LED TVs available today, but LG’s other OLED and LED offerings give us confidence that the new alphabetical entry into the TV acronym library will be worthy be.
