LG QNED Mini-LED TVs are the best LCDs for 2021, but they are not as good as OLED

CES 2021 fast approaching, but LG just could not wait to introduce the TV world’s latest four-letter word. The manufacturer, especially known for excellent OLED TVs like the CX series, comes out with a new series of televisions called QNED. Based on the more general LCD TV technology instead of OLED, QNED combines the benefits of its NanoCell technology with quantum dots according to LG, for improved color, contrast and brightness.

QNED TVs will be at the top of LG’s 2021 LCD TV range, but company representatives were careful to say that they will not deliver the same picture quality as its OLED TVs. LG has not announced any new 2021 OLED TVs, but is expected to do so closer to CES.

QNED is just a letter away from QLED, a technology proposed by Samsung and TCL with a largely similar substructure (LED LCD taillights and quantum dots), and confusion is therefore inevitable. LG says it will use QNED TVs Mini-LED taillight technology, much like TCLs 6-series and 8-series QLED TVs, which in turn improve brightness and contrast compared to traditional LED taillights. Samsung has not yet announced any Mini-LED TVs, but markets exceptionally high-end TVs that use wall-mounted. MicroLED technology.

LG has provided a lot of additional information about its QNED sets. It did not say exactly how NanoCell and quantum dots would work together (both technologies traditionally focus on color enhancement) or offer more specifications – except that the TVs will have ‘up to’ 30,000 Mini-LEDs and 2,500. local eclipse zonespresumably in the largest sizes. It has also not been announced exactly which models QNED will use or which screen sizes and resolutions (4K and / or 8K) they will have. Representatives of the company promise more details closer to CES; LG has a press conference scheduled for January 11th.

Meanwhile, TV buyers are facing another confusing, similar-sounding brand. At CNET, we will do our best to unravel it as soon as we get more information. However, how QNED compares to QLED and other luxury LCD TVs, or to OLED TVs, is the biggest question, and ultimately that answer will have to wait for reviews. Stay tuned.
