LG promises three years of Android updates despite being busy with phone businesses

LG has announced a promise to release future Android industry updates on many of its smartphones, despite the fact that they confirmed earlier this week that it will leave the phone industry completely. The Velvet, Wing and G and V series phones from 2019 or later should get three Android updates from their release, and ‘certain 2020 models like LG Stylo and K series’ will get two updates.

The Velvet, for example, appeared with Android 10 last year, and its Android 11 implementation is currently underway. This means that Android will also have to get Android 12 and 13 at some point, if we assume that Google continues its annual cadence. LG describes this announcement in various ways as a “three-year promise” and a “three-OS update guarantee.”

The announcement is a bit surprising, as LG phones would not normally receive as many updates, even if LG was actually engaged in the phone industry. The company announced a dedicated “software upgrade center” in 2018, but little or nothing has changed to the Android update situation. Most of its latest premium phones will only receive Android 11 by the end of 2021.

Earlier this week, LG’s Korean website indicated that some selected models would also get an Android 12 update.
