Lego announces new video game set featuring Sonic the Hedgehog and characters from Sonic Mania. (If you could have told the six-year-old that one day there would be a Lego set with a Sonic theme, he would cry tears of joy.)
You can view a draft design for the set, which revolves around Sonic’s classic Green Hill Zone stage, at the top of this post. I love how ridiculous Sonic looks in Lego form, and the Tower of Death Egg Robot from Doctor Eggman is just amazing.
The concept for the set was presented to Lego by Viv Grannell, a Sonic fan in the UK, via the Lego Ideas program. Submissions must receive 10,000 votes before Lego will consider making an actual Lego set, so it’s no small feat that Grannell was able to get the necessary support for the idea of becoming a reality. To see more photos of the concept, go to the Grannell page for the project on the Lego Ideas website.
Lego says the series is now entering the “product development phase”, so it looks like we’re a way to actually buy it.
Last year, Lego dipped its toes in a crossovers with video games Mario-theme-sets. It has an interactive element. The Lego Mario figure makes a sound when placed in a pipe or when you let it jump on a Goomba, for example. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like Lego Sonic can make sounds, so don’t expect to hear any of its snarling winks. Maybe Lego could add it in a future series.
