Leaker spills new details on the foldable iPhone – BGR

  • A leak says Apple is working on a second foldable iPhone prototype, but the clamshell device will not be launched soon.
  • The foldable iPhone looks like the Galaxy Z Flip phone with a foldable OLED screen from Samsung.
  • The device may be on the earliest date of September 2022, but there are no guarantees.

Samsung has been teasing foldable phones for years before finally taking the plunge last year. Samsung was of the opinion that it was ready to launch the first foldable handset in the world, which turned out not to be the first foldable world. Nor does the Galaxy Fold appear to be a well-thought-out design. Samsung had to cancel the late April launch after reviewers found two major problems with the phone. The foldable screen has a screen protector that would destroy the screen if it was removed. In addition, the hinge allowed debris to end up in the phone, which also affected the screen. Samsung needed five months to launch a redesigned version of the device. The Z Flip and Z Fold 2 that followed did not repeat the mistakes. But the failed Galaxy Fold launch proved that the technology was not ready for the kind of smartphone that many people wanted.

Fast forward to the end of 2020, and we have a new rumor outlining the kind of foldable handset that many people would like to see. This is a clamshell iPhone with a foldable screen similar to the Z Flip. But the device is coming soon.

YouTuber Jon Prosser, who has turned into a productive fan, said a few months ago that Apple is developing a foldable iPhone similar to the Galaxy Z Flip. But rather than having a continuous, foldable screen, this device features two different screens separated by a hinge in the middle.

In a new video, Prosser said that Apple is also prototyping a foldable iPhone with a clamshell design with a single, foldable screen. Apple apparently tests shells at a Foxconn factory in Shenzhen. According to his sources, this is not the complete phone they are testing. Instead, they look at the durability of the hinge. The phone finally has a foldable screen from Samsung, rather than a microLED panel.

The report states that Apple will decide on one of the two foldable prototypes described above, rather than launching one of each. Reports say that a foldable iPhone could be good by September 2022. A release in 2022 or 2023 would make sense if current progress is taken into account.

Samsung is expected to introduce at least one new foldable next year, and other vendors of Android devices may do the same. After all, Huawei and Motorola have already launched their first foldable devices, and several other Chinese smartphone makers have teased some of their concepts.

By the time the first foldable iPhone arrives in 2022 or later, there are plenty of foldable devices on the market.

It’s not uncommon to see Apple take time with new technology. The good news here is that Apple is not in a hurry with the foldable iPhone. Apple will do this when it is confident it can offer a premium folding experience. By that time, we expect to see more innovations that will benefit from advantageous folding devices, including better hinge and folding technologies that increase the durability of such devices. Not to mention that the price should drop significantly. Even phones like the Galaxy Z Flip or the foldable Razr from Motorola are more expensive than regular flagships.

There is also no guarantee that Apple will continue with its foldable iPhone plans if the end product does not meet its standards. Apple patents prove that the company studies all kinds of technologies, even if not all of them make commercial products.
