Schaffer, allegedly one of the rioters who used bear spray against the police during the January 6 uprising at the U.S. Capitol, will remain in Marion County Jail until at least Friday.
Schaffer must prove to the federal magistrate that he is not a threat to himself or the public before being released on bail. Others charged with the uprising in the Capitol have been granted bail, but have been ordered to surrender their firearms, avoid contact with other suspected Capitol rioters and stay away from all state-owned buildings. Some other suspected rioters have been banned from using social media and participating in political rallies.
Schaffer made his first appearance in court on Monday (January 18) after handing himself over to Hamilton County police the previous day.
The musician, who lives in Columbus, Indiana, turned himself in to authorities around 3pm Sunday (January 17), Chris Bavender, a specialist in public affairs for the FBI Indianapolis Field Office, said.
According to the FBI, Schaffer was one of the rioters who sprayed the Capitol police officers with a form of capsaicin pepper spray, which was sold by many retailers outdoors, as part of their efforts to push the officers back into the Capitol and to violate the Capitol building itself.
