Lawmakers introduce bill to recall Biden’s forces after Syria’s strike

A dual group of senators on Wednesday called for the withdrawal of presidential powers granted by Congress in 1991 and 2002, which would revoke authorization for military power in the Middle East as tensions between the US and Iran increase.

Senators Tim Kaine, D-Va., And Todd Young, R-Ind., Introduced legislation that would formally terminate the congressional powers established during the Gulf and Iraq wars to end the role of Congress in the beginning and end. of wars to confirm.

The move comes after lawmakers were frustrated by President Biden’s unilateral call for airstrikes in Syria last week, against militant forces backed by Iran and which launched attacks on US targets in Iraq.

The legislation was also introduced a few hours after a military base was targeted with US coalition troops in Iraq.

“The airstrikes in Syria last week show that the Executive Branch, regardless of the party, will continue to expand its war forces,” Kaine said in a statement on Wednesday. “Congress has the responsibility to not only vote for the authorization of new military action, but to revoke old authorization that is no longer needed.”

Democrats and Republicans put an end to US “perpetual wars” and seek to revoke the president’s ability to continue military force in Iraq – although this does not necessarily mean Biden’s ability to take military action in other Middle Ages Eastern countries to use would not be limited.

The House and Senate passed a similar measure by Cain last year aimed at limiting President Trumps’ authority in launching military operations against Iran – although the legislation has been vetoed.

“Congress is working on an ATM when it comes to our essential duties to authorize the use of military force,” Young said. “The fact that the authorities are still legal for both of these wars today is an illustration of the dual failure of Congress to fulfill its oversight role in the constitution.”

Senators across the aisle have signed in support of the Kaine-Young bill, including sens. Tammy Duckworth, D-Ill., Mike Lee, R-Utah, Chris Coons, D-Del., Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, Dick Durbin, D-Ill., And Rand Paul, R-Ky.

A Pentagon spokesman described the attack on Wednesday as “disturbing” and “stuck” in the Biden government’s decision to launch “defensive” attacks last week.
