LAKE FOREST, CA – Three weeks after a Lake Forest man received his second dose of Pfizer vaccination, he received the call that no one from the Orange County Health Care Office wants to hear: he tested positive for coronavirus.
Gary Michael, a resident of Lake Forest, assumed he was safe from the virus. He learned that he was wrong.
“They told me yes, I’m positive for coronavirus,” Michael told the media. He was advised to go into quarantine while going through his number of symptoms.
It is not known what type of coronavirus he tested. Michael says his girlfriend tested positive on January 23, less than a week after receiving his second dose of vaccine.
Michael received his first dose on December 28 and his second on January 18, but he was exposed five days after his second shot. He was tested after visiting Mission Viejo Hospital for an unrelated medical reason.
Although the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the Pfizer vaccine is only 95 percent effective, it is unknown what would cause 5 percent to become infected with the virus later. According to Michael, his symptoms are minor, according to a report by Mercury News.
Scientists believe that optimal immunity to vaccination against COVID-19 comes two to three weeks after receiving the second dose, according to OC Health Care. This would have put Michael in the “still vulnerable” category for coronavirus when he was exposed.
