According to several reports, a preliminary agreement was reached Tuesday night between the Los Angeles Unified School District and the Los Angeles Teachers Union to reopen schools.
The agreement would include daily learning for elementary school students, but still relies heavily on online education for older students, reports the Los Angeles Times.
Middle and high school students would study in class two days a week, but other days away from home. The students would stay in the same class all day as moving rooms between periods and, according to the Times, learning at a distance from different teachers while sitting in the same classroom. Families would also be allowed to teach their child at a distance.
“As we have both stated for some time, the right way to reopen schools should include the highest standard of COVID safety in schools, the continuous reduction of the virus in the communities we serve and access to vaccinations for school staff, “United Teachers Los Angeles. President Cecily-Myart Cruz and LAUSD Superintendent Austin Beutner said in a joint statement. “This agreement achieves the shared set of goals. It is our joint commitment to the highest safety standards and the spirit of trust and cooperation that will take us back to schools.”

Primary school students would attend a half-day every day, allowing for smaller class sizes.
The decision was made in April because educators and other school workers can be vaccinated and achieve maximum immunity to the shot before returning to school, which according to the Times can take up to six weeks.
According to a timetable proposed by the school district, pupils would return for the first time on April 19, and older students would follow in early May. No official date has been set for the union.
Under the agreement, the province will be forced to move down to the “red level” of the more serious “purple level”, which is expected within days if the numbers of cases fall.
Schools have been closed since March 13 last year.
