Kyle Shanahan is in regular contact with Justin Fields’ QB coach

Justin Fields quarterback coach goes back a lot with Kyle Shanahan. So does Trey Lance’s.

It helps that they are the same person.

John Beck, who played for the 49ers coach from 2010 to ’11 when he was Washington’s attacking coordinator, has been working with Fields and Lance for several weeks.

As you would expect, Beck and Shanahan talked a lot recently.

‘I know I’ve been there before [Fields] for the past three months he will reach out and just want to ask questions or talk, ”Beck told Matt Barrows of The Athletic on Tuesday. And kind of: What are the things we’re working on, the things I think played into his system and were coached by him, I know how he’s going to coach quarterbacks? I know what he’s looking for. So I think this is an easy extension of Kyle in terms of the eyes I have for quarterbacks. ”

This is a good time for Shanahan to be in touch with his former QB. Shanahan and 49ers general manager John Lynch will attend Fields ‘second pro day on Wednesday, with the Ohio State product incorporating some of the 49ers’ concepts into his workout. Lance will do the same next Monday in his second pro day.

According to Barrows, Beck has worked with Shanahan’s quarterback before. He coached Matt Ryan while Shanahan was the Falcons’ attacking coordinator, as well as current 49-year-old forward Jimmy Garoppolo, restricted free agent Nick Mullens and former backup CJ Beathard.

Of course, he works by the nature of Beck’s job as a private QB coach with many teams’ signal callers.

“I have a unique relationship with the people in the 49ers building because I’ve known them for a while,” Beck told Barrows. ‘So there’s a great notoriety. And I’m not just talking to Kyle. [Vice president of player personnel] Adam Peters is a man I also talk to. Because they do not have the opportunity to go to these private workouts, I am someone who can give them information. So it’s not just Kyle. Just like with the [Denver] Broncos. I mean, I have a lot of teams … I have scouts, I have scouting directors, I have general managers. And everyone reaches out with questions. They all gather information. ”

The links between the 49ers and Alabama QB Mac Jones, whose pro-day was the first Shanahan and Lynch to attend together after the Niners swapped for the No. 3 pick in the NFL Draft 2021, have only sharpened. Shanahan’s contact with Beck about his clients and his attendance of their second pro days suggests that the 49ers’ decision is not in a stone’s.

At least Shanahan has a reliable contact with the 49ers’ best options at number 3. In a draft that follows a season as odd as 2020, any information helps.
